2018 D1 College Lacrosse Weekend Recap – Week 12
After the weekend of many games, we have a new number one team and a few surprise losses. With only a few weekends left of regular season play, it’s coming down to crunch time for a lot of NCAA Lacrosse teams. A win or loss could propel them in the right or wrong direction going into their conference tournaments and the NCAA tourney. Check out this weekend’s key matchups.
Albany Men’s Lacrosse vs Yale Men’s Lacrosse
Albany (11-2) loses to Yale (11-2) 6-14 The Great Danes suffer their second loss in the past three games. The Danes had to play two games this weekend, and on their away trip, they did not get the job done. Yale played a phenomenal game and then won each quarter handily. They outshot Albany by 20, had 26 more ground balls, and surprisingly lead the face-off battle. TD Irelan, who led the nation in winning percentage, had his worst game of the season going 8 for 21 and then snagging only 3 ground balls. Another big loss for the Great Danes was star player, and captain of the team, Connor Fields going down again with an injury and then not returning to the game.
Sean Eccles lead the squad on the day, scoring a hat trick with some exceptional goals. Yale had possession a lot of the game due to a good ride and great performance at the faceoff X. The Bulldogs had three players getting hat tricks, in this one. Their stud Ben Reeves, Lucas Cotler, and Matt Gaudet each netted three goals on the day. This huge win for Yale shot them up the rankings making them the new number one in the nation. Side note, Albany is now 0-2 against other dogs teams.
Maryland Men’s Lacrosse Falls To Ohio State Men’s Lacrosse
Maryland (10-2) loses to Ohio State (7-6) 10-12. As soon as Maryland retakes the number one spot in the nation, they take a loss and drop the lead ranking. A rematch of last year’s title game went the opposite way of the 2017 big dance. Ohio State came out ready for the away trip fast and took a 3-0 lead to begin the game. It was a back and forth game all the way through, it went into halftime tied at sixes. For the Buckeyes, Jack Jasinski notched 7 points and Colin Chell with 5 points, both had huge games. The Terps just weren’t there on offense, and they trailed the entire second half trying to fight back. Senior Connor Kelly led the way with 4 goals and an assist, but couldn’t rally the Terps for a victory.
Duke Men’s Lacrosse vs. Marquette Men’s Lacrosse
Duke (12-2) beats Marquette (6-6) 17-5. The Blue Devils did what they should this week and laid down a beating. The nation’s leading goal per game scorer, Justin Guterding, added to his collection with 6 goals 2 assists. Along with him Joe Robertson and Brad Smith had 5 points each to add. Duke looks to finish their season at home versus Boston U before a post season run.
Denver Men’s Lacrosse vs Providence Men’s Lacrosse
Denver (10-2) beats Providence (5-9) 13-6. Bill Tierney and Denver also as well took care of business this weekend getting the easy W. The face off king, Trevor Baptiste, went 17 for 22 and nabbed 8 ground balls. The Pioneers shared the wealth in points leading the way with 4 was Colton Mccaffrey. After him, four players got 3 points in the game. Joe Reid, Colton Jackson, Austin French, and Ethan Walker had great days and helped with the big team win. Denver closes out their regular season on the road at Marquette for what should be a great Big East matchup before playoffs.
John Hopkins Men’s Lacrosse vs Michigan Men’s Lacrosse
Johns Hopkins (9-3) beats Michigan (7-6) 10-9 A very even game the whole way through had to come down to a game-winning goal for the Blue Jays. This was a big conference game that locks Hopkins into the tournament. They had to go without Senior attackmen Shack Stanwick who was injured last week. Picking up his slack was Patrick Fraser who started in his spot putting up a hatty. Helping him out was star Joel Tinney who had a big game putting in 2 goals 4 assists, and Kyle Marr with the team high 4 goals. Michigan fought hard and never went away but could not win at X to get enough possession. Brent Noseworthy led the way with 4 goals, and adding to that was Kevin Mack putting up 3 goals 1 assist.
Rutgers Men’s Lacrosse vs Penn State Men’s Lacrosse
Rutgers (9-4) beats Penn State (8-5) 11-8 A big conference game for both teams trying to get into the Big 10 tourney. Penn State played a great game won a lot of face offs to earn possession but the Scarlet Knights had a stout defense and goaltending all game. Penn State tried to fight back most of the game as they were down but couldn’t get over the hump. The Nittany Lions were led by Mac O’Keefe with 3 goals and Dylan Foulds 1 goal 2 assists. Rutgers found the way to finish off a game completely. Stopped all comeback attempts and secured the big win. Their stud Jules Heningburg played well with 2 goals 2 assists. Helping him out was Christian Mazzone with 3 goals and Kieran Mullins 3 goals 1 assist.
Navy Men’s Lacrosse vs. Syracuse Men’s Lacrosse
Navy (9-4) beats Syracuse (7-5) 13-12 This was a wild game that came down to the wire. Literally, the game was decided with less than a second left on the clock. This was a big top twenty matchup added to Navy’s resume. The big story was the starting faceoff men for both teams were brothers. In the battle of the siblings, the Midshipmen Joe going 16 of 27 outlasted his younger brother Danny 11 for 27 and even scored the game-winning goal off a faceoff. This was a phenomenal game throughout the whole thing, back and forth action of great lacrosse. It went into the half tied at sixes after back and forth runs from each team.
Leading the charge for the Orange, Stephen Rehfuss was dishing out dimes left and right with 1 goal 6 assists. Along with him, Nate Solomon added 2 goals 2 assists and Brendan Bomberry with a hatty. Navy ended their regular season with quite the bang getting a solid win that could help them out big time. Piloting the way to victory was Jack Ray 4 goals 2 assists and Greyson Torain with 3 goals.
