NCAA Division 1 Men’s Lacrosse Week Five Recap
Marquette Men’s Lacrosse vs. Ohio State Men’s Lacrosse
Marquette (3-0) beats Ohio State (4-1) in OT 8-7 to start off the weekend in a nail-biter. The Golden Eagles were keen on defense and held Buckeye All American Tre Leclaire without a point and even zero shots on goal. It was a fierce gritty battle all game and the refs let them play. Marquette was led by 2 attackman Anthony Orsini and John Wagner who had 3 points each. Wagner was the one who scored the game winner which was allegedly his first right-handed shot in his collegiate career so what a time to take the off-hand rip. That was OSU first loss of the season coming off their championship run and the Golden Eagles stay undefeated with the big win.

John Hopkins Men’s Lacrosse vs. Princeton Men’s Lacrosse
Johns Hopkins (2-2) hands Princeton (1-2) the big loss 16-9, a much-needed win for the Blue Jays do not want three straight losses. They dominated this physical game pretty much all day long and really pulled away in the fourth quarter. It was led by faceoff man Hunter Moreland who went 20 for 25 and picked up 14 ground balls and the team’s point leader Kyle Marr who put up 5 points. The team spread around the scoring but other big producers were the 6’5 giant Cole Williams with 4 goals and Joel Tinney with 1 very impressive goal and 4 dimes on the day. The Tigers star Michael Sowers had a big day for himself with 3 goals and 3 assists but Princeton did not have the ball much.

Penn State Men’s Lacrosse vs. UPenn Men’s Lacrosse
Penn State (3-2) beats Penn (2-2) 10-7 in the old battle of Pennsylvania. A big key to the win for the Nittany Lions was face-off man Gerard Arceri who went 18 for 20 at the X along with 13 ground balls and even put up a goal on his lone shot. Along with him, big producers Mac O’Keefe and Nick Spillane added 3 points apiece. Penn played good defense outside of the second quarter where they allowed 6 goals after letting up zero in the first. It is hard to win a game where you can not win a faceoff and the Quakers found that out this weekend. Coming off an emotional win against Duke, Penn played well besides just never having the ball on their side.
Villanova Men’s Lacrosse vs. Delaware Men’s Lacrosse
Villanova (5-0) takes down Delaware (3-1) 13-12 to stay undefeated on the year. The Wildcats are used to playing in close games as they finish the game with a win in their third 1 goal game this season. It was a physical game with some hard hits and nice shots. The Blue Hens fought hard behind Dean Disimone with 5 goals, Bryce Reid with 4, and their keeper kept them alive with 13 saves. Villanova started a little slow, went down but picked it up and kept it up. They used their very potent offense attacking all over but team point leader Christian Cuccinello added a few more with 7 goals, and the winning one. He has been added to the Tewaaraton Watch List and has had a phenomenal start to his season, pouring in goals left and right. Villanova should sneak into the top 5 with a few loses that happened this weekend.

Maryland (5-0) defeats Notre Dame (2-1) 12-10 in a big-time win for the Terps. Connor Kelly has a sensational day getting 10 points racking up 3 goals and 7 dimes. First Maryland player to reach 10 points since 1973! Along with him, Jared Bernhardt was feeling it putting in 3 goals and an assist and faceoff man Justin Shockey won a majority 15 for 22, huge in the second half winning 10 of 11 and scooped up 11 ground balls. The Fighting Irish were scraping back all game trying to get the lead but could not hold Maryland’s offense back. They were led by Ryder Garnsey who had his best game of the season putting in 4 goals and adding an assist. They were scoring when he was on the field but he only played a little more than half. It was a solid win for the Terps to keep the undefeated season rolling on.

Albany Men’s Lacrosse vs. Cornell Men’s Lacrosse
Albany (3-0) survives against Cornell (1-2) 11-9 in a close one for the Great Danes. The new top team in the country gets put through a scare behind the Big Red keeper Christian Knight who had a big 19 saves. Cornell went into halftime with the lead but could only put up 3 goals in the second half. A big reason the game went how it did was TD Ierlan went 24 for 24 at the X and 22 ground balls, hard to win if you can’t get the ball. Albany fierce attack came behind 5 points apiece for the stud Connor Fields and Sean Eccles. Big time freshman Tehoka Nanticoke had 3 points in the game with a goal and 2 assists on a season-low 3 shots. Jordan Dowiak led the fight for Cornell putting in 4 goals.

Syracuse Men’s Lacrosse vs. Virginia Men’s Lacrosse
Syracuse (3-1) wins against Virginia (4-1) 12-11 in a wonderful game to end a good weekend of lacrosse. A big, big road win for Syracuse against a good Virginia team. Both teams played well and it could have gone either way in the end but Syracuse held off the comeback. The Cavaliers had a lot more turnovers and did not score all third quarter yet scoring 6 in the fourth it was not enough to take back the lead. Syracuse spread the wealth but was lead by freshman Tucker Dordevic who put up 4 big goals. Virginia also spread it around but three players led the comeback Dox Aitken with 5 points, Mike D’Amario with 4 points, and Michael Kraus with 3 points.
